چکیده

Recent research in theoretical physics on ‘Malament-Hogarth space-times’ indicates that so-called relativistic computers can be conceived that can carry out certain classically undecidable queries in finite time. We observe that the relativistic Turing machines which model these computations recognize precisely theΔ2−sets of the Arithmetical Hierarchy. In a complexity-theoretic analysis, we show that the (infinite) computations of S(n)-space bounded relativistic Turing machines are equivalent to (finite) computations of Turing machines that use a S(n)-bounded advice f , where f itself is computable by a S(n)-space bounded relativistic Turing machine. This bounds the power of polynomial-space bounded relativistic Turing machines by TM/poly. We also show that S(n)-space bounded relativistic Turing machines can be limited to one or two relativistic phases of computing. What computers can or cannot compute is determined by the laws of physics alone, and not by pure mathematics. in: D. Deutsch, The Fabric of Reality, 1998.

Vibration analysis of a Timoshenko non-uniform nanobeam based on nonlocal theory: An analytical solution

In this article free vibration of a Timoshenko nanobeam with variable cross-section is investigated using nonlocal elasticity theory within the scope of continuum mechanics. Small scale effects are modelled after Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory while the non-uniformity is presented by exponentially varying width through the beam length with constant thickness. Analytical solution is achiev...

Analytical predictions for the buckling of a nanoplate subjected to non-uniform compression based on the four-variable plate theory

In the present study, the buckling analysis of the rectangular nanoplate under biaxial non-uniform compression using the modified couple stress continuum theory with various boundary conditions has been considered. The simplified first order shear deformation theory (S-FSDT) has been employed and the governing differential equations have been obtained using the Hamilton’s principle. An analytic...

Nonlinear analysis of radially functionally graded hyperelastic cylindrical shells with axially-varying thickness and non-uniform pressure loads based on perturbation theory

In this study, nonlinear analysis for thick cylindrical pressure vessels with arbitrary variable thickness made of hyperelastic functionally graded material properties in nearly incompressible state and clamped boundary conditions under non-uniform pressure loading is presented. Thickness and pressure of the shell are considered in axial direction by arbitrary nonlinear profiles. The FG materia...

Machines, computations and time; when P can be equal NP

The theory of computability is a mathematical abstraction that has proved to be very handy in explaining and foreseeing many facts about the computers, as we know them today. Yet, existing computers are objects embedded in our physical word and as such have to behave according to the laws of physics. This observation has had stunning consequences for our understanding of computations. For insta...
